Magnesium salt is a chemical compound, a salt with the formula MgSO4 consisting of magnesium cations and sulphate anions. It is a white crystalline solid, soluble in water.
Even though Magnesium Sulphate is used in medicines as a medicine, its main usage is also counted in agriculture.
Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral that is important for many systems in the body especially the muscles and nerves. Magnesium Sulphate also increases water in the intestines and thus enriches the intestines in result, increasing our bodily functions’ efficiency.
In medicine- Magnesium Sulphate is used both externally (as Epsom salt) and internally.
The main external use is the formulation as bath salts, especially for foot baths to soothe sore feet. In bubble baths too, Magnesium Sulphate is used which soothes the skin and provides a relaxing feel.
Such baths have been claimed to also soothe and hasten recovery of muscle pain, soreness, or injury. Though there is no such scientific claim to these claims, all in all, these salts improve the quality of bathes and are used for recreational purposes.
This brings us to the main benefit of the Magnesium Sulphate salt which is cosmetic: it prevents the wrinkling on our skin when we keep our skin immersed in water for prolonged sessions. It is also the usual component of the solution used in isolation tanks.
In some parts of the world, Magnesium Sulphate along with phenol is also used to heal splinters and also boil burns and that is just one of the uses in the medicine industry.
Internally as well, Magnesium Sulphate may be controlled by oral, respiratory, or circulatory routes. Since Magnesium is very important for the normal functioning of cells, nerves, muscles, bones, and the heart. Usually, a well-balanced diet provides normal blood levels of magnesium. However, certain situations cause your body to lose magnesium faster than you can replace it from your diet.
Magnesium Sulphate internally can also be used: replacement therapy for magnesium deficiency, treatment of acute and severe arrhythmias as well.
In agriculture, Magnesium Sulphate is used to increase magnesium or sulphur content in the soil. magnesium is a major component in magnesium hungry plants and thus Magnesium Sulphate helps in increasing the content in those plants.
It is most commonly applied to potted plants, or to magnesium-hungry crops, such as potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, lemons, and roses. Magnesium Sulphate is highly advantageous as it is highly soluble and its high solubility allows the option of foliar feeding.
Solutions of Magnesium Sulphate are also nearly pH neutral, if they are compared with alkaline salts of magnesium as found in limestone we will find they are neutral while limestone salts are basic; therefore, the use of Magnesium Sulphate as a magnesium source for soil does not significantly change the ph.
As for medication, Magnesium Sulphate was historically used as a treatment for lead poisoning prior to the development of chelation therapy, as it was hoped that any lead ingested would be precipitated out by the Magnesium Sulphate and then removed from the digestive system.
Due to this application of magnesium salt, veterinarians used it in an everyday fashion during the early-to-mid 20th century; Epsom salt was already available on many farms for agricultural use, and it was often prescribed in the treatment of farm animals which inadvertently ingested lead
Magnesium Sulphate is used as a brewing salt in making beer and this is one of the uses, where it is used in recreational purposes. It may also be used as a coagulant for making tofu (soya paneer).
Ever wonder how our houses are made? The cement, the bricks, and every other construction element we see near the site? The magic element here is Magnesium Sulphate- which is used to prepare specific types of cement by the reaction between magnesium oxide and Magnesium Sulphate solution, and after the reactions, the end result is way better than the Portland cement since their binding capabilities are great adding to the resistance. This cement is mainly adopted in the production of lightweight insulation panels. The only bar that drops when Magnesium Sulphate is used is its weakness in water.
As a beast of a salt, Magnesium Sulphate heptahydrate is also used to maintain the magnesium concentration in marine aquaria which contains large amounts of stony corals, and other sea organisms as due to their calcification, the magnesium content in their bodies, slowly depletes, and the depletion of magnesium content would deplete and then it would be super tough to just stabilize the ions in the aquaria.
In a magnesium-deficient marine aquarium, as mentioned above, the alkalinity of the water and the calcium levels in the water are very difficult to control because of the non-stabilization of ions and since not enough magnesium is present it becomes difficult to stabilize these ions in the saltwater and prevent their spontaneous precipitation into calcium carbonate.
Magnesium Sulphate becomes the hero here by stabilizing the magnesium content and stabilizing the ions in the aquaria.
